"Paying for the Praying"
Hello fellow First Christians!
Above is the slogan for this year's stewardship campaign. A bit catchy, don't you think?
Don't worry though, unlike some churches we aren't planning ATMs at entry doors, nor credit card readers for the collection plates! Instead, we plan a plain, old fashioned, low key campaign based on the idea of how important is it to you, to support our church’s transformation.
Details to follow, or like they say on TV, "But, wait; there's more!" Joe Bailey, Stewardship Chair

Look at What’s Happening
October 5th!
We will celebrate World Communion Sunday with a special communion liturgy. We will also affirm that all are God’s children as we receive our denomination’s Reconciliation offering—special funds used to advocate and promote human reconciliation, wholeness and shalom among all people.
Pastor Kim will ask us to think on, “What Would It Look Like to Live as Christ Would Live Today?” based on Ephesians 3:16-21.

FCC “Fall Fest” , “What’s In YOUR Pot?”
and Dessert Auction…
Sunday, October 26th at 5:30 PM !!
“What’s In YOUR Pot?” We are expanding the ‘Chili” concept to include anything that you might want to “put in a pot”. Do you have Grandma’s recipe for the best Beef Stew? Maybe Aunt Martha’s Chicken Noodle Soup? Or a recipe for a pot of rib-stickin Beans from Uncle Sam? There will be battle to see who will claim the titles for the “Best 3 at FCC!” Prizes will be given for the “Best of the Best” plus for the top 3 Desserts (one to taste, one to auction!) and for Best Table Decorations (for your “pot” entry)! All funds raised will go toward our Mission Trip
Bring your own toppings, crackers, chips with your entry if you want them. The church provides tasting cups, spoons, prizes, drinks and electrical power for the crock-pots! Sign Up sheets are outside the Office for your ’Pot’ entry or Dessert OR BOTH!!
The Education Committee is hosting a Fall Fest for the whole family to participate in the fun and games while voting for your favorite ‘Pot of …” and bidding for the yummy desserts submitted by our FCC Bakers! Mark your calendar for this date!
Come join the Fun, the Fellowship and the opportunity to taste all of the “special recipes” while we raise money to help those in need. For more information, contact Marshall Ferrell (Education) or Pam Shepherd (Outreach)

Parenting our Parents
Thank you, Gaila Martin, for assisting me in launching this new support ministry. Our first event will be a “Tell Us What You Need “ gathering. We already know that Lawton-Ft. Sill is blessed with many “experts” and resources in this area – our desire is to round up the ones that meet your needs right now. We also know that talking – venting – hearing how others have handled various situations is also a very welcome support and we want to facilitate that as well. We are in the process of contacting those in our congregation who are currently “parenting their parents” in some manner in order to find the best time for our initial gathering. If you want to be included in that contact, please let the church office know: 355-2437/ fccadmin@sbcglobal.net. ~ Pastor Kim

Welcome David Lucas!
Our very own ”Music Man” has stepped forward to serve his church as our Interim Director of Music. We are so grateful and look forward to his time leading us in music and praise. One of the downsides is not having him be able to delight us on the keyboard as much – bummer! David will assume all of Jan Logan’s duties and has agreed to serve until the end of this year, unless we find our new Director before then. Holli Le, our Assistant Director of Music, will continue as organist, accompanist, Handbell director and “SoulSpark” worship leader.
David was born and raised in the First Christian Church and at the age of 15, became the church organist. He received his Music Degree from Phillips University and his Masters from Southwestern State University. David and Virginia were married in the church.
David taught at Eisenhower Jr. High School from 1965-66, and in 1967-68 he taught the Eisenhower High School Band, Stage Band, Orchestra and Marching Band.
While in Enid, David was the church Organist and Youth Choir Director at Central Christian Church. He also has been the Organist and Choir Director at Boulevard Christian Church in Lawton.
David was named “Teacher of the Year” in 1982 at Lawton Public Schools and elected to the Oklahoma Bandmaster Hall of Fame in 2001.

You Are Invited … The Chancel Choir will begin rehearsal for the 2008 Christmas Cantata soon. We are always looking for more individuals to “make a joyful noise” in praise and would love to have you join us !
If you are interested in singing in the choir, please join us for rehearsal on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 pm.
David Lucas, Interim Directory of Music

Education Committee News
A huge thank you to the people who have volunteered to help with children’s church. This is a vital ministry and we appreciate you stepping up to help keep it going. We will be meeting with our volunteers on Sunday, October 5th, immediately after the worship service in the elementary classroom (across from the Chapel class, sanctuary floor level) to discuss schedules, curriculum, etc. If anyone else would like to be involved, in any way, with this ministry, please feel free to attend the meeting or contact Marshall Ferrell or Pastor Kim.
The church will be holding our annual Fall-Fest in conjunction with the Chili cook-off on October 26th. We need volunteers to help set up (Friday, October 24th), to assist in running the activities, and cleaning up. If you would like to help, please contact Marshall Ferrell.
The church will be participating in “Trunk-or-Treat” again this year. We will be set up on the street between FCC and Centenary from 6:00 – 8:00 pm on Oct. 31. Please plan to attend.

Karmyn Reimer of the Texoma Christian Camp Board has requested a Trustee or someone to represent our church. They should be able to attend meetings as often as every 6 weeks. They are moving ahead with plans to keep the camp viable and upgrade to meet the standards outlined by Kaleidscope. All things are possible. Fred Phillips has served as FCC’s representative for over 15 years. and now needs to hand over the reins for this ministry to another FCC member. We thank you Fred!

Chapel Class has given a gift to the Memorial Trust Fund upon the passing of members over the years. With the closing of our funds, we won’t be able to continue this tradition. So, this final contribution to the Memorial Trust Fund at this time is also in honor of those remaining members, active and inactive. We celebrate Chapel Class members from the beginning, those who have prayed and studied together and have served in many capacities: Teachers, Song Leaders, Pianists, Presidents, Treasurers, Committee Members, Faithful Attendees, Shut-ins, all those with whom we have worshipped over the years

In honor of Johnson’s Bakery, from which we receive free Sunday donuts and our communion bread.
In 1938 Cora and Charlie Johnson (second generation bakers) came to Lawton and opened a bakery on 3rd and C Ave. Two years later, due to an equipment problem, they relocated to the 600 block of C Ave. In 1952 they moved to their present location at #8 SW 11th St. Cindy Johnson Craft is the 4th generation baker and very likely the last. The super market chains are replacing this type of small town bakery. Sign of the times, I guess.
For over 50 years, my family enjoyed the best birthday cakes ever; take your ideas into the store and they will create a masterpiece! And as many of us know, the sweet breakfast rolls, brownies and cookies are superb.
The next time you are in the neighborhood, stop and give them your support; be sure to tell them you are from First Christian! Let them know we appreciate them!
Darlene Miller
P.S. As the holiday’s approach, remember they also have gift certificates for a special gift!

Reflections from My Desk….
by Pam Shepherd (from an e-mail)While watching a little TV on Sunday instead of going to church, I watched a church in Atlanta honoring one of its senior pastors who had been retired many years. He was 92 at that time and I wondered why the church even bothered to ask the old gentleman to preach at that age.
After a warm welcome, introduction of this speaker, and as the applause quieted down, he rose from his high back chair and walked slowly, with great effort and a sliding gate to the podium. Without a note or written paper of any kind he placed both hands on the pulpit to steady himself and then, quietly and slowly he began to speak....
"When I was asked to come here today and talk to you, your pastor asked me to tell you what was the greatest lesson ever learned in my 50 odd years of preaching. I thought about it for a few days and boiled it down to just one thing that made the most difference in my life and sustained me through all my trials. The one thing that I could always rely on when tears and heart break and pain and fear and sorrow paralyzed me... the only thing that would comfort was this verse....
"Jesus loves me this I know. For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong, we are weak but He is strong ... Yes, Jesus loves me... Yes, Jesus loves me... Yes, Jesus loves me... The Bible tells me so."
When he finished, the church was quiet. You actually could hear his foot steps as he shuffled back to his chair.
